The director Nathan Juran but I looked to see the work of one of the greatest special effects specialists of all time, Ray Harryhausen. Like his first film in this blog I chose one set in Italy, Sicily e a Roma per la precisione, e ne sono rimasto affascinato in tutti i sensi.
Un'astronave precipita nel mare di Sicilia. Alcuni pescatori riescono a salvare 2 membri dell'equipaggio, uno però morirà presto durante le cure. Sono americani di ritorno da una missione su Venere, dove hanno scoperto esseri mostruosi. L'embrione di uno di questi era contenuto in una capsula che finirà in mano ad uno zoologo per vie traverse. Ne verrà fuori una via di mezzo fra una lucertola e un dinosauro il quale, nell'atmosfera terrestre, cresce a vista d'occhio. Dilemma tipico: lo ammazziamo il mostro o cerchiamo di studiarlo per il bene della scienza? E il resto lo lascio scoprire. Siamo comunque in un filone che oggi è molto classico nella trama, con il mostro che farà disastri, poi la cattura, la fuga in centro a Roma, l'esercito che entrerà in azione... non manca nemmeno l'eroe e la bella che se ne innamora.
Non ci sono particolari elucubrazioni da fare. E' sicuramente un film storico, con degli effetti per i tempi sbalorditivi e del gran lavoro dietro per farli. In particolare per la difficoltà di effettuare animazioni a passo uno sincrone e perfettamente integrate coi movimenti dei protagonisti umani. Alcune scene sono veramente mitiche, inevitabilmente numerosi i frame.
Grandissimo Harryhausen, e non ci si permetta di far paragoni con le "pupazzate timmoburtoniane" che tanto mi fan "cahare" come dicono in Toscana.
